Important Rules & Travel Tips for Visiting Iran

  1. General & Social Rules
  • Dress Code (Islamic Hijab)
    • Women must wear a headscarf (scarf or shawl) in public.
    • Loose-fitting clothes such as a manteau, tunic, or long dress are required.
    • Men should avoid wearing shorts or sleeveless shirts in public.
  • Social Etiquette
    • Public displays of affection (kissing, hugging between men and women) are not acceptable.
    • Always respect local customs and religious traditions.
  1. Alcohol & Drugs
  • Alcoholic beverages are strictly forbidden (import, purchase, or consumption).
  • Drugs and narcotics are illegal with very severe penalties.
  1. Photography & Filming
  • Taking photos of military areas, airports, government buildings, or strategic sites is prohibited.
  • Always ask for permission before photographing local people, especially women.
  1. Money & Banking
  • International credit cards (Visa, MasterCard) do not work in Iran.
  • It is recommended to bring cash (EUR or USD) and exchange it for Iranian Rials, or use tourist debit cards available inside Iran.
  1. Transportation & Driving
  • An International Driving Permit (IDP) is required for driving in Iran.
  • Pedestrians should be very careful when crossing streets, as traffic rules may differ from other countries.

  • Always carry your passport and visa with you.
  • Stay in official hotels, hostels, or guesthouses for safety and registration purposes.
  1. Religious & Cultural Rules
  • In mosques and holy shrines, proper Islamic dress code is mandatory.
  • Shoes must be removed before entering the main prayer halls.
  • During the month of Ramadan, eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours is forbidden (even for non-Muslims).

  • Internet is available, but some websites and social media platforms may be filtered.
  • Using a VPN is common among travelers, but keep in mind there may be legal sensitivities
